During the period of the 1800's through the 1920's there was intense competition for the "Police Badge" market. Badge makers and jewelers from San Francisco and Oakland competed fiercely and employed master engravers and enamel workers in an attempt to out-do each other. Local law enforcement officers were the happy benefactors of all this competition. Custom badges were quite reasonable and many officers paid for sterling and gold badges. Here then are a few examples of the workmanship of the era.
