Most turn of the century San Francisco Special Police badges were made of nickel, a few sterling but this is the only one I have seen that was sterling and hand engraved. A nice pie plate. Made by Wirth & Jachens circa 1886.

G.W. Blum was the S.F.P.D. photographer. Each time a new Chief of Police took office in San Francisco, Officer Blum would create a large framed "City Marshal's and Chief's of Police" group photo to hang in the Chief's office. The picture above was Blum's masterpiece in 1911 and is signed by him. It measures four feet wide and just over three feet tall. Hand painted design surrounds each individual photo.
