McKenzie Mitts
McKenzie Mitts, Nickel-plated set, joined with chain at the palm, each hand stamped Patented March 10 25".
7" long. Invented by Jacob Oliver McKenzie, a sheriff from Phillipsburg, Kansas, the steel mittens" were devised after a handcuffed prisoner captured by McKenzie grabbed the sheriffs gun and shot him in the leg.
The mitts were intended to immobilize a prisoners hands entirely while restrained.
The following information and photos are courtesy of John Bushey who published an informative article on the McKenzie Mitts in 2011. We thank him for all his research.
