In 1899 the legislature created the Game Board with the position of Game and Forestry Warden. Deputy Wardens were paid $500 annually. Before WWI there were 30 deputy game wardens but due to the war the number decreased to 17. The Oregon State Police in 1931 took over the Game Wardens.
