This building was once one of dozens of bars, dancehalls, nightclubs and brothels that lined this part of Pacific Avenue and the surrounding streets, from Gold Rush days until well into the 1960s. In 1915, a local newspaper listed 14 "resorts" on this block of Pacific alone! Over the years, 550 Pacific was home to a variety of famous nightclubs, including the Moulin Rouge, and the Red Mill. Then in 1920s, the famed Hippodrome nightclub moved here from across the street. In 1925, the police raided the Hippodrome after some soldiers from the Presidio became sick after drinking bootlegged liquor here. After Prohibition, this building housed the nighclub Diana.
Hippodrome located at 555 Pacific in San Francisco. From the days of the gold rush to Prohibition, one of the most famous and notorius clubs on the Barbary Coast.
